Driving up to my Mom’s house when we got into town, I had one of those moments where you just want to exclaim, “Good lord, what is that thing?”. Backstory (and photos) follow...
Last year, we were excited briefly when we saw that the undeveloped lot behind my mother’s house was for sale. Oddly, we couldn’t find it when we tried to do a real estate search. Eventually we discovered that it was because it wasn’t being sold just as a lot, but rather with a custom-built house on it, starting at $750,000.
A year later, construction is nearly complete, and the neighborhood gossip is that the price as-built is over a million. In typical McMansion style, they felled every tree on the property (wouldn’t want any of those, oh no), and built to the maximum footprint and maximum height allowed by law. The new residents? A couple with one teenaged child.
Here’s the new view from my mom’s back patio:
The far right and left give an idea of the previous density of trees. The particularly observant will also note the other houses in the background. The stone house on the left is a decently large house in the land of the sane. The houses in the right background are typical of the neighborhood.
